Short Courses OVERVIEW

At DIA, we define Fashion as an expression of personality in the ever-evolving world of material, technology, and hand-crafted design advancements. Students contextualize their knowledge, skills and understanding of creating ethical fashion within a social framework that respects society and humanity for the benefit of the future.

The program enables the student to complete 16 expertise and skill-based international certificates from our partner colleges in the UK, USA, and Australia that are woven into their undergraduate curriculum and improve their skill set and position them for a brighter future in the context of global fashion and textile industry. Students are exposed to experiential learning through visits, exchanges, and masterclasses. The course offers different specialization in the final year to choose from. The learning during the course culminates into final design project in the final year reflecting student’s design philosophy and personal design aesthetics.

The 4 year program starts with foundation level focusing on studying interdisciplinary studio to grasp the fundamentals of design and fashion. It aids in the growth of an advanced “design” mindset and perception, as well as a knowledge of the multidisciplinary nature of design and its connections to the environment, culture, and the senses and emotions of people.

Second year creates a learning environment in which seeds of research, analysis and conceptualization skills are nurtured. Students learn how to translate and realize their 2D ideas into 3D prototypes with appropriate finishes. In this year students will be exposed to social and cultural context of fashion, media studies and will be learning to develop their visual language for an effective presentation. The final leg of second year gets converted into 2 month industry internship for every student before they start with their advance and creative design practices.

Third year focuses on elevated International competitions for students and creative techniques in women’s wear and men’s wear. Student acquire advance skills in exploring and ideating with different materials, textiles, surfaces, trends and production techniques though Industry- classroom project.

Final year give students a scope to manage their own learning in form of final design project. The focus is to address the modern design issues in fashion and trends across the globe. The year starts with branding and entrepreneurship learning which support their final collection.

Learning Outcomes

B. Des. in Fashion Design
Duration: 4 Years
Eligibility: 10+2

First year is categorically the foundation year focusing on the interdisciplinary studio learning to grasp the fundamentals of design and interior trends. It introduces the student to the world of art and design through art appreciation, material study and basics of design. The students focus on conceptualization and critical thinking through various classroom activities. With around 70% Practical subjects in the program and 30 % theory subjects, students get to learn about the interior design industry more closely.

Year 2 ( Sem. - 3 and 4 )
Knowledge and  Comprehension levels. 
The students after completing level II will be able to :-

  1. Inquire, explore, and investigate through different modes of research through cultural, economic and social references.
  2. Compare and assess the knowledge of fashion market categories, and trends to comprehend the outcome for the next in Fashion and apparels.
  3. Identify the Latest technology to build fashion and record the results through reflecting on the exploration of materials, tools and technology.
  4. Translate the idea into a 3 -d prototype choosing appropriate technique, fabric and finishing.
  5. Express and restate the fabric types, and fabric choice as per the requirement of the brief.
  6. Communicate and express their ideas into digital medium in 3D immersive experience.

Year 2 ( Sem. - 3 and 4 )
Comprehension and Application. 
The students after completing level II will be able to :-

  1. Apply the creative, strategic and practical principles and techniques involved in design and development within Fashion Design and Development.
  2. Examine and communicate through their personal visual language, to interpret the aesthetic awareness of materials, brands, form and processes based on Industry brief & expectations.
  3. Experiment and test the outcome of the classroom learning for an international competition to judge their time management skills.
  4. Categorize distinguish garment categories and specialize in menswear, outerwear, corsetry and kids ware to realize prototypes of industry standards.
  5. Appraise problems that affect economically sensible and sustainable outcomes in regard to the fashion design, development, and lifestyle industries.

Year 4 ( Sem. - 7 and 8 )
Analysis, Synthesis and Evaluation.  
The students after completing level II will be able to :-

  1. Apply and showcase the evidence of the Creative Attributes through developing prototypes, creating brand recognition, examine the market study, and evaluate the brand’s vision to successfully develop on one’s own practise.
  2. Evaluate and measure fresh possibilities to the production processes currently in use, such as digital design and AR/VR, on-time manufacture, ethical practices and inventive clothes manufacturing methods.
  3. Organize, recognize and formulate diversity, equity, and inclusion principles that pays respect to communities and individuals who have been excluded from the mainstream fashion scene.

The Association of Designers of India and IMS-DIA's partnership will benefit fashion design students by offering them with access to an exclusive network of individuals interested in the Indian design scene and by fostering a meaningful connection between design professionals and business.

WDO

As a strategic partner, IMS DIA engages with WDO to become an official member of its worldwide designer's learning community and to participate in World Design Capital®, World Design Talks, World Industrial Design Day, World Design Impact Prize (TM), and Interdesign®.

IFFTI

IMS-DIA is part of a global network of International Fashion and Textile Institutes, and our students and faculty have a meaningful voice among a diverse range of Institutions from around the world (currently 55 institutions from 23 countries), providing an opportunity to share knowledge and intercultural understanding to inform, develop, shape, and direct the fashion and textile curricula and research agenda.

Program Highlights

Industry- Academics Partnership

The fashion design student has the opportunity to learn and hone their design skills while working on modules that are set in a hybrid model of practical - industrial -classroom situations through projects with prestigious brands/partners like Aditya Birla, Nida Mehmood, Shilpi Gupta, Surkhab, Pankaj and Nidhi, Shoppers Stop, and many more.

International Competitions part of the program learning.

In the course of their undergraduate studies over the course of 4 years, all fashion design student participate in 2 international competitions. The two contests are in line with the program's learning objectives, which are subtly woven into the curriculum to expose students to design competitions.

Internship

DIA students must perform a two-month internship as part of their curriculum. Through their selection of internships at leading design firms, students have the chance to learn about various facets of the Indian fashion design industry. The internship gives them practical experience, develops their professional network, and gives them exposure to portfolio presentations. Each student receives guidance from a DIA faculty mentor who ensures that their learning goals are reached.

Blend of AI and Sustainability

The right fusion of technological and empathetic skills is a key component of the B.Des in fashion design. The curriculum gives students the chance to learn about the most recent advancements in AI, AR, and VR, which will help them create future-proof clothing and tackle major design issues. To equip students with cutting-edge design abilities, AI in design is being introduced at the foundational level.

70% Practical Curriculum

With 70% practical exposure, the B.Des fashion design curriculum is the most advanced curriculum for learning and fostering design process. DIA offers 22 labs that are enriched in offering latest technology, hands on material experience, and design thinking for an amplified learning process.

International Faculty - Student Exchange

Cross culture, Primary research, experience of different social structures, are few key components of studying fashion, and to foster them, DIA opens to all its student an opportunity to participate in international exchange programs with world’s best design universities or collages across globe. In addition to exchange program, DIA brings to the classroom a pool of international faculties to deliver a module or workshop every year in DIA campus in NCR.

Ankur Chhabra - Head of the Department

Masters in fashion Technology and graduation in Fashion design from NIFT (Delhi) comes with more than 20 years of industry and 17 years of academic experience. He has worked with brands and export houses and understand the business of fashion in Indian sector.

Shruti Dudani

Masters in Fashion Design from Nottingham Trend University, UK is a practicing fashion designer with 6 years of academic experience, closely connected with the Fashion world. Shruti comes with an expertise in design process and fashion technology.

Brajesh Kumar

Brajesh is a Fashion graduate from NIFT, Delhi and comes with a decade of experience in fashion Industry. He has developed his skills by working with Designers like Rajesh Pratap Singh and has worked on various projects including uniform design for different domestic Airlines.

Tulika

Tulika is a NID textile’s graduate with over a decade of experience in the industry and runs her own brand. Her expertise in textiles and Fabrics adds value to the fashion design program.

Gurmeet Singh

Gurmeet Singh has over 26 years of Industry and Academic experience. He is visiting faculty at NIFT, Delhi. His expertise lies in designing for print media and digital media. He specializes in Computer Aided design software
